Grammar / Notes

  • W-questions A question word such as wer, was, wo, wohin, wann, wie or warum opens the question, alone or as part of a question phrase (Wie alt, Welcher Bus), and the conjugated verb follows the question word or complete question phrase. Er fragt eine junge Frau: „Wo ist mein Hund?“(“He asks a young woman: ‘Where is my dog?’”)
  • von + dative von always takes the dative, whatever it describes, so the article after it becomes einem. Dort isst Bello die Pizza von einem kleinen Mädchen.(“There, Bello is eating the pizza of a little girl.”)
  • im = in + dem im is a contraction of in + dem. Here, dem is the dative form of the article because in takes the dative for a location (Wo?) or a point in time. Lukas sucht seinen Hund Bello im Park.(“Lukas is looking for his dog Bello in the park.”)
