Grammar / Notes

  • zuerst / dann / danach / später Sequencing adverbs such as zuerst, dann, danach and später put events in order. When one opens the sentence, the conjugated verb follows it directly and the subject comes after the verb. Zuerst sucht sie ein anderes Getränk, dann bestellt sie einen Tee.(“First she looks for another drink, then she orders a tea.”)
  • bitte / danke bitte makes a request polite (‘please’) and also answers thanks (‘you’re welcome’); danke means ‘thank you’. Both stand on their own or inside a short sentence. „Einen heißen Tee, bitte“, sagt sie.(“‘A hot tea, please,’ she says.”)
  • in + accusative (direction) in is a two-way preposition. With the accusative it answers Wohin? and marks a destination or change of place, so the article becomes ein. Sie geht in ein Café und möchte einen Kaffee trinken.(“She goes into a café and wants to drink a coffee.”)
