  • Plural nouns often change shape: one der Apfel but many die Äpfel: Sie möchte Äpfel essen, aber auf dem Tisch liegt nur ein Apfel. (“She wants to eat apples, but there is only one apple on the table.”)
  • The dative is used for a location with some prepositions like in and auf: Lisa steht in der Küche und hat großen Hunger. (“Lisa stands in the kitchen and is very hungry.”) — in + der Küche shows where she is.
  • The accusative is used with in for movement into a place: Deshalb gehen sie zusammen in den Supermarkt und kaufen viele neue Äpfel. (“Therefore, they go to the supermarket together and buy many new apples.”) — in den Supermarkt means they go into the supermarket (direction).
