Zwei schwere Pakete

Samstag, 5. September 2026

Gestern hatte Herr Schmidt Geburtstag.
Heute ist er auf der Post und holt zwei Pakete mit Geschenken ab.
Das kleine Paket ist so schwer wie das große Paket.
Das ist ein Problem, denn er kann nicht beide Pakete tragen.
Er fragt einen Mann: „Können Sie mir bitte helfen?“
Der Mann hilft sofort und trägt das kleine Paket zum Auto.

Grammar / Notes

  • denn (because) denn joins two main clauses and gives a reason. After denn, normal main-clause word order remains: the conjugated verb stays in second position. Das ist ein Problem, denn er kann nicht beide Pakete tragen.(“That is a problem, because he cannot carry both packages.”)
  • so … wie (as … as) so + adjective + wie compares two things as equal: so alt wie means ‘as old as’. In this basic pattern, the adjective has no ending. Das kleine Paket ist so schwer wie das große Paket.(“The small package is as heavy as the large package.”)
  • auf + dative (location) auf is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes der. Heute ist er auf der Post und holt zwei Pakete mit Geschenken ab.(“Today he is at the post office and is picking up two packages with presents.”)
  • zum = zu + dem zum is a contraction of zu + dem. Here, dem is the dative form of the article because zu always takes the dative. Der Mann hilft sofort und trägt das kleine Paket zum Auto.(“The man helps immediately and carries the small package to the car.”)
