Grammar / Notes
- Wollen wir …? (shall we?) Wollen wir …? makes a suggestion to do something together (‘shall we …?’). The conjugated modal opens the question and the infinitive stands at the end. Lara fragt Ben: „Wollen wir den Mann an der Rezeption fragen?“(“Lara asks Ben, “Shall we ask the man at the reception?””)
- bitte / danke bitte makes a request polite (‘please’) and also answers thanks (‘you’re welcome’); danke means ‘thank you’. Both stand on their own or inside a short sentence. Sie gehen zur Rezeption und Lara sagt: „Unser Schlüssel funktioniert nicht, können wir bitte einen neuen bekommen?“(“They go to the reception and Lara says, “Our key doesn’t work, can we please get a new one?””)
- in + accusative (direction) in is a two-way preposition. With the accusative it answers Wohin? and marks a destination or change of place, so the article becomes ein. Spät am Abend kommen Lara und ihr Freund Ben müde in ein kleines Hotel.(“Late in the evening, Lara and her friend Ben arrive tired at a small hotel.”)
- vor + dative (location) vor is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes dem. Sie stehen vor dem Zimmer, aber der Schlüssel funktioniert nicht.(“They stand in front of the room, but the key does not work.”)
English
The New Key
Late in the evening, Lara and her friend Ben arrive tired at a small hotel.
They stand in front of the room, but the key does not work.
Lara asks Ben, “Shall we ask the man at the reception?”
They go to the reception and Lara says, “Our key doesn’t work, can we please get a new one?”
The man gives Lara a new key.
Now the new key works, and the door opens.
