Grammar / Notes

  • dürfen + infinitive dürfen expresses permission (‘may’, ‘be allowed to’); with nicht it expresses a prohibition. The infinitive goes to the end of the clause. Aber der Busfahrer sagt: „Sie dürfen im Bus nicht essen!“(“But the bus driver says: ‘You are not allowed to eat on the bus!’”)
  • V2 after a time or place expression In a declarative main clause, the conjugated verb stands in second position. When a time or place expression comes first, the subject follows the verb: Heute arbeite ich zu Hause. Am Nachmittag ist es draußen sehr heiß.(“In the afternoon, it is very hot outside.”)
  • an + dative (location) an is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes der. Er isst sein Eis an der Haltestelle und wartet auf den nächsten Bus.(“He eats his ice cream at the bus stop and waits for the next bus.”)
  • auf + accusative (direction) auf is a two-way preposition. With the accusative it answers Wohin? and marks a destination or change of place, so the article becomes den. Er isst sein Eis an der Haltestelle und wartet auf den nächsten Bus.(“He eats his ice cream at the bus stop and waits for the next bus.”)
