Grammar / Notes
- sollen + infinitive sollen expresses an instruction or an expectation that comes from someone else (‘is supposed to’, ‘should’). The infinitive goes to the end of the clause. Sarah sagt: „Ja, aber du sollst das nächste Mal bezahlen.“(“Sarah says, “Yes, but you should pay next time.””)
- Yes/no questions A yes/no question begins with the conjugated verb and the subject follows it: Hast du Zeit? / Kommt er heute? Nele fragt Sarah: „Kannst du die Rechnung bezahlen?“(“Nele asks Sarah, “Can you pay the bill?””)
- in + dative (location) in is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes einem. Um sieben Uhr morgens sitzen Nele und ihre Freundin Sarah in einem Café.(“At seven in the morning, Nele and her friend Sarah are sitting in a café.”)
