Dienstag, 29. September 2026

Grammar / Notes

  • möchte + noun / infinitive möchte expresses a polite wish or request (‘would like’). It is followed by a noun or by an infinitive at the end of the clause. Er sieht eine Kellnerin und fragt: „Ich möchte etwas trinken. Kann ich bitte die Getränkekarte haben?“(“He sees a waitress and asks: ‘I would like something to drink. Can I have the drinks menu, please?’”)
  • Imperative: Sie The polite imperative has the verb first followed by Sie: Kommen Sie!, Nehmen Sie Platz! For most verbs, this verb form looks like the infinitive. Die Frau antwortet: „Ja, natürlich. Nehmen Sie bitte diese Getränkekarte hier.“(“The woman answers: ‘Yes, of course. Please take this drinks menu here.’”)
  • können + infinitive können expresses ability or possibility (‘can’). The conjugated modal stands in second position in a main-clause statement and the infinitive moves to the end of the clause. Er sieht eine Kellnerin und fragt: „Ich möchte etwas trinken. Kann ich bitte die Getränkekarte haben?“(“He sees a waitress and asks: ‘I would like something to drink. Can I have the drinks menu, please?’”)
  • an + dative (location) an is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes einem. Paul sitzt an einem kleinen Tisch im Restaurant.(“Paul sits at a small table in the restaurant.”)
