Grammar / Notes

  • von … bis … (from … to …) von … bis … marks the beginning and the end of a time span: von neun bis zwölf Uhr, von Montag bis Freitag. Am Dienstag ist Mila von acht bis zwölf Uhr in der Schule.(“On Tuesday, Mila is at school from eight o’clock until twelve o’clock.”)
  • bitte / danke bitte makes a request polite (‘please’) and also answers thanks (‘you’re welcome’); danke means ‘thank you’. Both stand on their own or inside a short sentence. Sie fragt: „Kann ich das Heft bitte morgen mitbringen?“(“She asks, “Can I bring the notebook tomorrow, please?””)
  • können + infinitive können expresses ability or possibility (‘can’). The conjugated modal stands in second position in a main-clause statement and the infinitive moves to the end of the clause. Er antwortet: „Ja, du kannst es morgen mitbringen.“(“He answers, “Yes, you can bring it tomorrow.””)
  • in + dative (location) in is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes der. Am Dienstag ist Mila von acht bis zwölf Uhr in der Schule.(“On Tuesday, Mila is at school from eight o’clock until twelve o’clock.”)
