Grammar / Notes
- helfen + dative helfen takes a person in the dative, not the accusative. Sie hilft ihm und schaut unter das Bett.(“She helps him and looks under the bed.”)
- Time expressions: am / um / im Some common time expressions use a fixed preposition: am with a weekday or many parts of the day (am Montag, am Abend), um with a clock time (um acht Uhr), and im with a month or season (im Mai, im Sommer). Morgens um halb acht sucht Fabian seine neuen Schuhe im Schrank.(“At half past seven in the morning, Fabian looks for his new shoes in the closet.”)
- unter + accusative (direction) unter is a two-way preposition. With the accusative it answers Wohin? and marks a destination or change of place, so the article becomes das. Sie hilft ihm und schaut unter das Bett.(“She helps him and looks under the bed.”)
- auf + dative (location) auf is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes dem. Dort schläft die Katze auf dem Schuh.(“There, the cat is sleeping on the shoe.”)
