Grammar / Notes
After ten minutes, a doctor calls number twelve and Daniel is glad.”)
- geben: dative person, accusative thing geben can take a person in the dative and a thing in the accusative: Er gibt mir den Schlüssel. Verbs such as geben, schenken, zeigen and bringen work this way. Dann findet sie seinen Namen und gibt ihm die Nummer zwölf.(“Then she finds his name and gives him number twelve.”)
- Direct speech with sagen sagen reports the exact words someone says. A colon follows the reporting clause and the quote stands in German quotation marks: Sie sagt: „Der Bus kommt gleich.“ Sie liest ihn und sagt: „Entschuldigung, ich habe Ihren Namen in der Liste für Ärzte gesucht.“(“She reads it and says, “Sorry, I looked for your name on the list of doctors.””)
- an + dative (location) an is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes der. Die Frau an der Information findet seinen Namen nicht.(“The woman at the information desk cannot find his name.”)
