Grammar / Notes
- finden + object + adjective finden with an accusative object and an adjective gives a simple opinion: Ich finde den Film gut means ‘I think the film is good’. Lukas findet die weiße Zahnpasta gut und kauft sie.(“Lukas thinks the white toothpaste is good and buys it.”)
- Direct speech with sagen sagen reports the exact words someone says. A colon follows the reporting clause and the quote stands in German quotation marks: Sie sagt: „Der Bus kommt gleich.“ Die Verkäuferin sagt: „Guten Tag, die weiße Zahnpasta ist gut und nicht teuer.“(“The saleswoman says, “Hello, the white toothpaste is good and not expensive.””)
- Grammatical gender and pronouns German pronouns often follow the grammatical gender of the noun. Here, die Zahnpasta is feminine, so it is referred to as sie (her). Lukas findet die weiße Zahnpasta gut und kauft sie.(“Lukas thinks the white toothpaste is good and buys it.”)
- vor + dative (location) vor is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes dem. Er steht vor dem Regal.(“He stands in front of the shelf.”)
