Grammar / Notes

  • können + infinitive können expresses ability or possibility (‘can’). The conjugated modal stands in second position in a main-clause statement and the infinitive moves to the end of the clause. Mit diesem Licht kann Anna die kaputte Lampe schnell reparieren.(“With this light, Anna can quickly repair the broken lamp.”)
  • Grammatical gender and pronouns German pronouns often follow the grammatical gender of the noun. Here, die Lampe is feminine, so it is referred to as sie (she). Gestern war die Lampe im Zimmer noch gut, aber jetzt ist sie kaputt, und es ist ganz dunkel.(“Yesterday the lamp in the room was still fine, but now it is broken, and it is completely dark.”)
  • am = an + dem am is a contraction of an + dem. Here, dem is the dative form of the article because an takes the dative for a location (Wo?) or a point in time. Am frühen Abend ist Anna allein in der Wohnung.(“In the early evening, Anna is alone in the apartment.”)
  • im = in + dem im is a contraction of in + dem. Here, dem is the dative form of the article because in takes the dative for a location (Wo?) or a point in time. Gestern war die Lampe im Zimmer noch gut, aber jetzt ist sie kaputt, und es ist ganz dunkel.(“Yesterday the lamp in the room was still fine, but now it is broken, and it is completely dark.”)
