Grammar / Notes
- Dative: dem / der / einem / einer In the dative singular, masculine and neuter der / das become dem and ein becomes einem; feminine die becomes der and eine becomes einer. kein and possessives such as mein take the same endings: keinem / keiner, meinem / meiner. Am Feiertag geht Emma mit ihrem Bruder Ben zum Marktplatz in der Stadt.(“On the holiday, Emma goes with her brother Ben to the market square in the city.”)
- gerade / jetzt (right now) German normally uses the present tense for actions happening now; gerade or jetzt can make ‘right now’ explicit. Emma möchte gerade ein Foto von den alten Häusern machen, aber sie hat kein Handy dabei, also gibt Ben ihr sein Handy.(“Emma wants to take a photo of the old houses right now, but she does not have a phone with her, so Ben gives her his phone.”)
- Perfekt with haben The Perfekt is commonly used to talk about past actions and events. It is formed with a conjugated form of haben in second position in a main-clause statement and the past participle (gemacht, gekauft) at the end. Dann haben sie zusammen zwanzig alte Fotos gelöscht.(“Then they deleted twenty old photos together.”)
- auf + dative (location) auf is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes dem. Emma ist traurig, und Ben lacht: „Ich habe zu viele Fotos von unserer Katze Mimi auf dem Handy!“(“Emma is sad, and Ben laughs: “I have too many photos of our cat Mimi on the phone!””)
