Grammar / Notes
- möchte + noun / infinitive möchte expresses a polite wish or request (‘would like’). It is followed by a noun or by an infinitive at the end of the clause. At six o’clock on Friday, Ben is standing in front of the cinema and wants to buy a ticket for a film.”)
- können + infinitive können expresses ability or possibility (‘can’). The conjugated modal stands in second position in a main-clause statement and the infinitive moves to the end of the clause. Then he can buy the ticket and watch the film.”)
- vor + dative (location) vor is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes dem. At six o’clock on Friday, Ben is standing in front of the cinema and wants to buy a ticket for a film.”)
- am = an + dem am is a contraction of an + dem. Here, dem is the dative form of the article because an takes the dative for a location (Wo?) or a point in time. At six o’clock on Friday, Ben is standing in front of the cinema and wants to buy a ticket for a film.”)
English
The Ticket for Five Euros
At six o’clock on Friday, Ben is standing in front of the cinema and wants to buy a ticket for a film.
But Ben’s money is not enough for the ticket.
He asks the woman at the ticket desk, “Is there a ticket for five euros?”
The woman says, “On Monday, the ticket costs only five euros.”
Ben thinks that is good and wants to come back on Monday.
Then he can buy the ticket and watch the film.
