Grammar / Notes

  • Separable verb: anrufen anrufen is a separable verb. In a main-clause statement it splits: the conjugated verb form (ruft) stands in second position and the prefix (an) moves to the end. Er ruft Mia an, aber Mia antwortet nicht.(“He calls Mia, but Mia doesn’t answer.”)
  • bitte / danke bitte makes a request polite (‘please’) and also answers thanks (‘you’re welcome’); danke means ‘thank you’. Both stand on their own or inside a short sentence. Dann schreibt er eine Nachricht: „Hallo Mia, wo bist du? Bitte antworte mir!“(“Then he writes a message: ‘Hello Mia, where are you? Please answer me!’”)
  • möchte + noun / infinitive möchte expresses a polite wish or request (‘would like’). It is followed by a noun or by an infinitive at the end of the clause. Am Samstag möchte Lukas Mia im Park treffen, aber der Park ist sehr groß.(“On Saturday, Lukas wants to meet Mia in the park, but the park is very big.”)
  • im = in + dem im is a contraction of in + dem. Here, dem is the dative form of the article because in takes the dative for a location (Wo?) or a point in time. Am Samstag möchte Lukas Mia im Park treffen, aber der Park ist sehr groß.(“On Saturday, Lukas wants to meet Mia in the park, but the park is very big.”)
