Grammar / Notes
- deshalb (therefore) deshalb introduces a consequence (‘that is why’). When deshalb begins the clause, it fills the first position, so the conjugated verb follows it directly and the subject comes after the verb. Die Bank ist frei, deshalb gehen sie schnell dorthin.(“The bench is free, so they quickly go there.”)
- Plural: Bank → Bänke The plural of Bank is Bänke. German forms plurals in several ways, often with an ending and sometimes an umlaut. The definite article in the nominative plural is die. Dort sind schon viele Kinder, und alle Bänke sind voll.(“Many children are already there, and all the benches are full.”)
- möchte + noun / infinitive möchte expresses a polite wish or request (‘would like’). It is followed by a noun or by an infinitive at the end of the clause. Klaus möchte sich setzen, aber er findet keinen Platz.(“Klaus would like to sit down, but he cannot find a spot.”)
- unter + dative (location) unter is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes einem. Emma sieht am anderen Ende vom Spielplatz eine kleine Bank unter einem Baum.(“Emma sees a small bench under a tree at the other end of the playground.”)
