Grammar / Notes

  • Direction: Wohin? A destination can answer Wohin? Two-way prepositions take the accusative for a destination (in die Stadt, ins Kino); zu takes the dative (zum Arzt, zur Schule); nach is used with cities and most countries without an article, and in nach Hause. Am Morgen ist Klaus zum Friseur gegangen.(“In the morning, Klaus went to the hairdresser’s.”)
  • so … wie (as … as) so + adjective + wie compares two things as equal: so alt wie means ‘as old as’. In this basic pattern, the adjective has no ending. Der Friseur schneidet seine Haare so kurz wie auf dem Foto.(“The hairdresser cuts his hair as short as in the photo.”)
  • Imperative: Sie The polite imperative has the verb first followed by Sie: Kommen Sie!, Nehmen Sie Platz! For most verbs, this verb form looks like the infinitive. Klaus zeigt ihm das Foto und sagt: „Bitte schneiden Sie meine Haare so kurz wie auf diesem Foto.“(“Klaus shows him the photo and says, “Please cut my hair as short as in this photo.””)
  • auf + dative (location) auf is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes dem. Der Friseur schneidet seine Haare so kurz wie auf dem Foto.(“The hairdresser cuts his hair as short as in the photo.”)
