Grammar / Notes

  • sprechen mit + dative sprechen mit names the person someone talks to; mit always takes the dative: Ich spreche mit meiner Kollegin. Deshalb spricht er mit seiner Kollegin Anna.(“Therefore, he speaks with his colleague Anna.”)
  • auf + accusative (direction) auf is a two-way preposition. With the accusative it answers Wohin? and marks a destination or change of place, so the article becomes den. „Den habe ich gestern auf den Schrank gelegt“, antwortet sie.(“‘I put that one on the cabinet yesterday,’ she answers.”)
  • auf + dative (location) auf is a two-way preposition. With the dative it answers Wo? and marks a location, so the article becomes dem. Lukas sieht auf dem Schrank nach und findet ihn sofort.(“Lukas checks on the cabinet and finds it immediately.”)
  • im = in + dem im is a contraction of in + dem. Here, dem is the dative form of the article because in takes the dative for a location (Wo?) or a point in time. Im Büro sucht Lukas schon lange einen wichtigen Ordner.(“In the office, Lukas has been looking for an important folder for a long time.”)
